about

At a bit of a loose end, I found myself looking through photographs stored on my phone. On there, there were plenty of happy memories, and more than a handful of silly ones, but there were also photos of people we lost recently, and photos dating back to times I'd much rather forget.

It got me thinking about how nostalgia is often seen through rose-tinted glasses. Some will lament the passing of "the good old days", but as they do so, they gloss other the bad times that went with them. Some, as I have done many times, will look back on their younger days and wonder why we did some of the completely foolish or naive things we did (hindsight can be such a wonderful thing). Either way, whether you look back at the past fondly or regretfully, you distance yourself from the present; ignoring the fact that time has moved on, and will continue to do so; those times are gradually fading into the distance.

I'd been listening to a bit of Miles Davis, from his pre-Electric years, and envisioned the piece as having a kind of 'minimalist jazz ensemble playing incredibly slowly in a massive warehouse' feel to it; something to bring out the melancholy in it.

about

Simon Slator's Spontaneous Musings Tamworth, UK

An outlet for spontaneous mid-to-longform ambient musings, borne out of a need to create something suitable for home- working.

It's kind of turning into some sort of musical journal type thing.

Pieces are uploaded as soon as they are complete - sometimes that may be the same day - but all will be available as freebies.
