about

This piece was written the day after a series of elections held here in the UK; an election that has prompted discussions on the effects of the so-called "Culture War".

I can't understand how this "Culture War" seems so intent on raging. More to the point: I don't see how any one side can win. You effectively have two sides who have very different impressions of cultural change. On one side, you have a collection of people who think it's gone too far, and a "system restore" is necessary to bring culture back within traditional values. On the other side, you have a group of people who not only take cultural change to ludicrous extremes, they are intent on forcing it through immediately. Even though the extremists on either side of this "culture war" number but a small percentage of the population, the media love to report on them because sensationalism sells. In the middle, you have a number of disenfranchised people who are publicly coerced towards choosing a side, but would rather not.

This piece represents my own observations of this "culture war". At the start, you have two factions - both very noisy and both aligned very much to the extreme left and right. To further represent these sides, I bit-crushed the sounds and used the most extreme reverb I could, to represent their distorted views reverberating within their own echo chambers. There are also sounds rotating left and right, representing the barbs lobbed from one extreme to the other. In among this chaos, another sound begins to emerge: one that occupies the broader and more central territories, and takes on a gentler and more harmonious tone. This represents the "silent majority" - the people whose cultural views are more moderate, empathetic and nuanced - more human if I may. The "live and let live" people. The extreme voices diminish towards nothingness, while the compassionate and harmonious voices slowly build and becomes the gentler and more peaceful norm.

This piece is not an endorsement of either side of the political and cultural debate, but more an acknowledgement that the real victor is ultimately the way we learn, grow and improve ourselves as a society and as a species. As long as we continue to do so, there is hope for everybody.
